Web Surfing at the Speed of HughesNet
Tired of the dialup dance? You know the steps: click, dial, wait, busy, click, dial, wait, busy, click, dial, wait, static noises, wait, static noises, wait, connected! By this time you’ve forgotten why you were connecting in the first place.
Your HughesNet satellite internet connection is always on. Turn on your computer, and *poof* you are connected. All you do is sit down and start browsing.
But there is more to satellite internet than an always-on connection. Your broadband connection gives you blazing speed that you can’t imagine if you’ve been stuck on dialup. Web pages load in an instant. Files download before your mouse is off the OK button. Streaming video actually streams rather than hiccupping and hesitating.
Let’s look at some examples of just how fast your satellite internet connection is compared to a 56k dialup.

Latency: the Achilles’ Heel of Satellite Internet
Some satellite companies won’t talk about latency, but we want our customers to find the best solution possible.
When using the internet, your computer is talking to another computer, possibly on the other side of the world. Speed is how fast the computers can exchange information in a steady stream. Latency is the delay between one computer talking and the other computer responding.
With other internet connections, the computers are connected by land lines. Even computers on opposite sides of the globe have only a 25,000 mile round trip distance the signal has to travel. Often the target computer is much closer, meaning less latency.
When using satellite internet, information is beamed to a satellite, down to the target, back up to the satellite, and back to your computer. That’s about a 100,000 mile round trip, even if the target computer is right next door!
With normal surfing, downloads, or streaming audio/video this is not a problem. However any activity that requires real-time two-way communication will not perform well over satellite internet.
Some examples are:
- Online action games such as first-person shooters
- Video conferencing or real-time collaboration
- VOIP internet telephone service
- Online day trading
Virtual Private Network (VPN) does not perform well over satellite internet and data transfer will be 50%-75% slower when using VPN.
Most likely, you won’t even notice latency or be affected by it. If you are not going to be running one of these time-sensitive applications, then it should be clear that HughesNet satellite internet is your ticket out of the dial-up Dark Ages.
Dial-up service comparison based on standard dial-up connection at 56Kbps. HughesNet speeds are based on download speeds of up to 1 Mbps for HughesNet Professional service and 700 Kbps for HughesNet Home service. Actual speeds vary based on the amount of traffic on the Internet, content on a particular Website, or by the overall performance and configuration of your computer. Stated speeds not guaranteed. Limitations Of Satellite internet
Although the new HN9000 modem increases upload and download speeds for all residential and business service plans, high-speed Internet by satellite service is STILL NOT recommended for some sub-second time-sensitive types of Internet uses. The sub-second delay (latency) of satellite Internet access affects connection speeds. While this sub-second delay is mostly unnoticeable in general web browsing, it may have a significant impact on time-sensitive applications. Therefore, we do not recommend the following applications for use over HughesNet:
Real-time online gaming, particularly "twitch" games such as Quake, Diablo etc.
Real-time collaboration and conferencing, such as NetMeeting or videoconferencing
VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) Internet phone service
Online day trading
In addition, connecting to a Virtual Private Network (VPN) with the HughesNet service is not recommended, despite the faster speeds available with the HN9000 modem. If you choose to run VPN over satellite, your data speeds may be reduced as much as 50% to 75% while the VPN session is active. Once the VPN session is terminated, the subscriber's typical connection speed resumes. HughesNet Technical Support does not provide configuring or troubleshooting support for subscriber's issues associated with VPN connections.
Latency refers to the amount of time it takes a packet of data to travel across a network. With satellite service, that data must travel up to the satellite and back (about 45,000 miles). This round trip adds about a half a second delay to the total time your computer takes to communicate with a Website or host server.
